In their respective keynote addresses at the opening session of WGC in Paris, Total chief executive Patrick Pouyanne and Engie chief executive Gerard Mestrallet both touted natural gas as "an energy for the future" and effectively issued a calling to arms in a battle against coal.
Pouyanne said straight out that carbon price mechanisms could enable coal to be replaced by natural gas in the global energy mix, reminding delegates that the use of coal causes twice the CO2 emissions compared to gas.
