The incident on 7 January at the gas processing plant on Norway’s west coast resulted in the leak of 22 tonnes of methane over a period of more than nine hours from a fractured pipe linked to the Statpipe system, according to the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA).
In its investigation report, the agency stated there was “escalation potential relating to possible ignition of the gas leak, where parts of a gas-transporting pipe could have been exposed to jet fire and heat radiation”.
