According to a deal signed today between Gazprom and the Tajik government, the Russian gas giant will also build a distribution network in the former Soviet republic.

"We are interested in making Tajikistan self-sufficient in terms of fuel and energy because it will ease the economic tensions in the country," Gazprom deputy chief executive Valery Golubev told Reuters.

The company said the four fields - Rengan, Sargazon, Sarykamysh and West Shaambary - should produce around 2 billion cubic metres of gas by 2012 which would meet all the needs of the domestic market.
