Alexey Miller, chairman of Gazprom said Total "will be the first company invited" back to join the Russian player in the "unique and technologically challenging project," that it delayed indefinitely almost two years ago.
Gazprom made the statement after Miller met with Total chief executive Patrick Pouyanne at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.
Total is being favoured above Norwegian state player Statoil, which backed out of the first phase of the development before Gazprom halted the project.
