US supermajor Chevron has started up one of the world’s largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects at its Gorgon liquefied natural gas project in Western Australia.

Chevron confirmed Thursday the safe start-up and operation of the carbon dioxide injection system on Barrow Island.

The reinjection project sees CO2 separated from the gas stream prior to processing and liquefaction on Barrow Island, instead of being flared it is then injected into the Jurassic Dupuy Formation at a depth of about 2.5
