According to a Reuters report citing sources close to the campaign, Hamm is a leading contender for the role of energy secretary should Trump win the 8 November general election. Hamm would be the first to hold the position to be drawn directly from the US oil and gas industry since the department's founding in 1977.
Hamm previously was energy advisor to 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney's campaign, and he endorsed Trump earlier this year.
