Opec said the request had been circulated to all member countries and a decision is set to be made when the organisation meets on 4 December, with Indonesian Minister of Energy & Mineral Resources, Sudirman Said, invited to join the meeting.

Opec said the December meeting would include the formalities of reactivating Indonesia's membership with the group.

“Indonesia has contributed much to Opec’s history,” the Vienna-based organisation said in a statement.

“We welcome its return to the organisation.”

Indonesia joined Opec in 1962 and was Asia's sole member until it suspended its membership on 1 January 2009 as rising domestic demand and falling production turned it into a net oil importer.
