The findings, recorded by researchers from the University of Texas and Southern Methodist University, upends the industry's main argument that earthquakes have historically been (and continue to be) a naturally occurring phenomenon.
However, the study found that specific causes of the quakes has differed over the decades, from rapid extraction in the 1920s and 1930s to waterflood operations through the 1970s.
