New processes introduced by the Northern Territory government for land access agreements between mining, petroleum and agriculture industries have received the backing of industry groups.
Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles unveiled the new process on Monday which requires oil companies and land owners to reach a land access agreement before exploration activities are approved.
Under the new process, if an agreement can not be reached within 60 days it will be referred to an arbitration panel which will be made up of government and industry representatives which will then work towards a successful agreement between the parties within 21 days of the formation of the panel.
