DOF Subsea's Bahamas-flagged Skandi Pacific was supporting semi-submersible drilling rig Atwood Osprey about 166 kilometres north-west of Karartha early on Tuesday when the weather hit.
The vessel stopped working cargo and attempted to take shelter. While a worker was trying to secure cargo, a wave came over the back deck of the vessel, crushing the man between a moving mini-container and a cargo skip.
