Japan saw a spike in LNG as part of its energy mix following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami which led to the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

The disaster resulted in the country becoming more dependent on gas as nuclear power was abruptly pulled from the mix.

According to Institute of Energy Economics, Japan senior analyst Hiroshi Hashimoto, LNG accounted for 29.3% of Japan’s power generation mix in 2010 and ballooned to 43.2%
