Around 5% of global natural gas resources are currently flared, equating to between 110 billion cubic metres and 140 Bcm – more than Africa’s annual electricity consumption – DNV GL said at a presentation at the World Gas Conference in Paris on Tuesday.
The classification giant has spent the past year or so working specifically on how to create value from flared gas, which it said produces around two thirds of black carbon emissions in the Arctic.
