Headquartered in Houston, the Lower 48 unit had already endured an estimated 20% reduction in staff in late 2014 and by some estimates, total reductions in the unit have exceeded 40% since it was separated from the rest of BP.

“We have recently informed our (Lower 48) staff that we plan to reduce the size of the workforce as we continue to simplify our business, improve efficiency and reduce costs without of course compromising safety which remains our number one priority,” spokesman Brett Clanton said.
