The fire occurred Sunday at the Whiting Petroleum-operated Kannianen 43-5 saltwater disposal well, about 10 miles north of New Town in Mountrail County, according to a release from the North Dakota Oil & Gas Division.
Whiting reported that 400 barrels of brine was released, contained and recovered at the site.
The fire has been extinguished, and a state inspector has visited the site, according to the division.
