Lukoil was awarded the licence, located on the northern tip of the Taimyr peninsula between the Kara and Laptev seas, with a bid of 1.9 billion roubles ($29 million) that was 600 times higher than the tender starting price set by Russia’s Natural Resource Ministry, business daily Kommersant reported.
The company, which is Russia’s largest privately-owned oil producer, was reported to be in contention for the tract with Rosneft that already holds several licences in the Kara Sea.
