Lula cried and laughed at the first press conference since he was charged on Wednesday with corruption and money laundering for allegedly receiving bribes disguised as favors from an engineering company implicated in the massive Petrobras graft scandal.
Lula's wife and six others have also been charged in the sprawling Petrobras kickback scandal known as Operation Car Wash.
On Wednesday, prosecutors denounced Lula as the "general" in command of the corruption scheme, allegedly aimed at keeping his party in power.
