Work began at 6pm BST on Wednesday, the company said.
The harsh environment jack-up rig Maersk Highlander is drilling the first production well through a wellhead platform (WHP) jacket and well access deck, which were installed at the field this spring.
Continuous drilling activity is planned over the next five years.
