The OVV initiated an investigation in 2013 following an earthquake in August 2012 near the village of Huizinge in Groningen province that measured 3.6 on the Richter scale.
The inquiry sought to examine if ExxonMobil and Shell’s 50/50 joint venture Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) had taken into account the safety of the inhabitants of the province when making operational decisions on extraction of natural gas in Groningen in previous years.
