The well was drilled to a total depth of 3933 metres in the Chia Zairi formation and encountered a 300 metre oil column in the Jurassic with matrix porosity of 17%.
However, Genel said two drill stem tests over the interval failed to flow and yielded inconclusive results, adding there was evidence of perforations plugged with heavy oil.
“Whilst the presence of a significant oil column is encouraging, further evaluation with the right flow test equipment is required before we can determine whether this discovery is commercially viable,” Genel chief executive Tony Hayward said in a statement on Tuesday.
