The Melewis-1 well hit a gas column which Santos said on Friday was still being evaluated via a drill stem test.
The company also confirmed another well drilled on the same PSC in East Java, Merem-1, had failed to uncover any hydrocarbons and had been plugged and abandoned.
The two-well near-field exploration well was targeting the Pliocene aged Mundu formation in the Madura Strait which is productive in the adjacent Santos-operated Maleo and Peluang fields.
