Centrica Energy said the gas-rich area has produced 6.5 trillion cubic feet of gas since it first came online on 9 January 1985.
The Morecambe Bay gas fields, located off the coast of Lancashire and Cumbria, were first discovered in 1972.
The late Chief Petrophysicist John Bains, who died in 2013, discovered the gas reserves after the original drilling rights to the fields were relinquished in the wake of unsuccessful efforts to find oil.
