Training courses in the past have focused on general well-control knowledge across onshore and offshore oilfields, said Bill Mahler, executive vice president and general manager of Houston-based Wild Well Control.

But now operators are seeking control experts for specific environments, he said.

"So if they have a rig that's fixing to go drill in a very harsh deep-water environment they'll ask us to do a very specific curriculum that will focus on exactly what their challenges are going to be," Mahler said in a press conference at the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston on Monday.
