David French, most recently president and chief executive of compatriot Bankers Petroleum, is joining the Calgary-based player from 24 October, Penn West revealed on Tuesday.
Roberts, who has been in the role since June 2013, will remain with the company for this month to conduct a handover.
Before Bankers, French held several executive positions at US independent Apache. Prior to that he was at McKinsey & Co and also Amoco Production (now BP), working in the Permian basin.
