The defeated incumbent state government led by Adam Giles was resolutely in favour of natural resource development, and was especially keen that the state's potential as a significant natural gas producer be met.

The Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association said today it has argued against the policy, but acknowledged it reflected concern in the community over the industry’s impacts – "all too often stirred up by the false and exaggerated claims of opponents".
