Health & Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors served the Chinese-owned operator with an improvement notice following the gas release on 6 August.

The leak – understood to be “significant” under HSE classification -- occurred after work to shut down and clean a glycol contactor, a vessel used to dry produced gas prior to export.

Inspectors found procedures that staff were following did not address all the risks associated with the work, in particular the hazards of draining and purging accumulated gas condensate and pressurised nitrogen to an atmospheric glycol storage tank.
