Now the country’s Petroleum Directorate (NPD) is warning companies not to simplify projects so much that resources and technological innovation is lost along the way.

The combined cost estimate for eight planned field developments has dropped to Nkr150 billion ($18.1 billion) from Nkr270 billion, according to a study by the NPD based on figures from the operators.

Of the eight projects, only the Statoil-operated Utgard field has been given a formal go-ahead by the licensees so far, with a plan for development and operation (PDO) submitted to the authorities earlier this month.
