New Zealand's government has decided it will no longer issue offshore oil and gas exploration permits, while new onshore permits will be limited to the Taranaki area.

The Labour-led coalition government, which includes the Greens Party, warned last month that changes to the oil and gas exploration framework were being considered.

“There will be no further offshore oil and gas exploration permits granted,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said today.

This year’s blocks offer will be limited to onshore acreage in Taranaki alone.
