Inpex said the well will be drilled between May and August next year in a location off Yamaguchi and Shimane prefectures in water depths of 210 metres.
The well is part of the “Heisei 26~28 Domestic Offshore Drilling Program in Japan”, which aims to determine the presence of hydrocarbons and conduct geological studies.
Inpex said it had acquired 3D seismic data in the area in 2013 based on a survey completed two years previously by the government.
