The Muscat-based player said on Wednesday that the 1.02GW Miraah project will deliver the world’s largest peak solar output when completed at its Amal oilfield from 2017.

The development will use GlassPoint’s thermal enhanced oil recovery (EOR) system, through concentrated solar power, or CSP, which uses mirrors to concentrate sunlight onto a boiler tube, boiling water into steam.

Heat from the collectors is used to generate high-pressure steam, which is injected underground to raise the oil’s temperature and thin it out to the consistency of water.
