Malaysia’s national oil company Petronas has come up trumps with a pre-salt exploration well in Block F14 (Likuale) off Gabon.

The ultra-deepwater Boudji-1 wildcat off south Gabon discovered both oil and gas. Ninety metres of gross high-quality hydrocarbon-bearing pre-salt sands were found in the well, which was drilled in a water depth of 2800 metres.

Petronas, together with the Ministry of Petroleum & Hydrocarbons Gabon, will conduct an assessment to further determine the commerciality of the resource volume.

Petronas said the discovery marks a “significant milestone” as the company expands in West Africa, while it also demonstrates its frontier exploration and deep-water operational capabilities.
