Joe Jamail died on Wednesday after a bout with pneumonia, according to local reports. He was 90 years old.
Jamail, a Lebanese-American and a Houston native, famously won what was then the largest settlement in US legal history in Pennzoil's face off with larger competitor Texaco over the acquisition of Getty Oil.
A jury awarded Pennzoil $10.53 billion in damages after Texaco tried to swoop on Getty, which had already agreed to sell itself to Pennzoil.
