Turkey has been targeting guerrillas from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq and IS jihadists in Syria. The thrust has been against the PKK.

The PKK, a strong IS opponent, is affiliated with another Kurdish group, People’s Protection Units, that is based in Syria and has also claimed it has been targeted by Turkey. The airstrikes, though, are unlikely to upset the close economic ties between Turkey and the autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), which has reluctantly allowed the PKK to use bases in northern Iraq.
