Canadian junior Renaissance Oil has announced a partnership agreement with Russia's Lukoil that could make it among the first private players to get a crack at exploring Mexico’s tricky Chicontepec paleochannel under a new exploration and production contract model.

The Amatitlan block, where Lukoil acquired a 50% integrated service contract interest in 2015, remains tied up in a cumbersome transition process for legacy area where Pemex had held service agreements with outside players.
