The pair were awarded the contract areas A5-B in the Angoche basin, and Z5-C and Z5-D in the Zambezi Delta, with ExxonMobil to act as operator.
It marks Rosneft’s entry into Mozambique’s prospective offshore play, which has generated major gas discoveries, and is an extension of its established strategic partnership with the US giant in Russia and elsewhere.
Rosneft, led by president Igor Sechin, said in a statement the awards were secured in “strong competition” with other global supermajors after national regulator the Institute of National Petroleum (INP) evaluated 23 proposals under the latest licensing exercise.
