The two companies have also agreed to exchange petroleum products starting this year as they furthered an existing relationship through a series of agreements in Caracas this week.

The agreements were struck by Rosneft boss Igor Sechin during a visit to Venezuela, with deals signed in the presence of President Nicolas Maduro, the Moscow-based, state-backed player said on Friday.

Last year Rosneft and PDVSA agreed a plan to form a joint venture that would eventually look to exploit gas from the Mejillones, Patao and Rio Caribe fields off Venezuela – all part of the large offshore Mariscal Sucre gas project.
