The ambitious project envisages a pipeline of up to 6000 kilometres that would connect the Russian gas grid to India.
The shortest considered route would enter northern India via the Himalayas, although this would be technically challenging.
Another route would be via Iran and Pakistan but such a project could easily be derailed because of political tensions. Also, such a pipeline would be more costly than the long-proposed Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline, said sources.
