The conflict between forces loyal to Saudi-backed exiled President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and the Shia Moslem Houthis has disrupted oil and gas production in the impoverished country.
The Houthi military setbacks in southern Yemen are not a complete surprise, considering the relentless bombardment, but do not signal an end to the conflict.
They may have lost control of Aden and several southern key provinces but the rebels remain firmly in control of the capital Sanaa and the overwhelmingly-Shia populated northern provinces that are solidly behind the militia force.
