Authorities said at the weekend that the 8000 people or so who had been evacuated from facilities owned by Suncor Energy and Syncrude could start returning back to work.
Rain and cooler temperatures helped stave off the threat from the fire, which has already burned more than a million acres in Northern Alberta. Although the fire has yet to be contained, the prolific oil sands region is now thought to be in the clear.
