The state-owned operator is looking to tap additional resources at the veteran North Sea field, brought on stream in 1986, through exploitation of satellite finds and increased recovery efforts.

Statoil stated in its application to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) that  the platform could be operated profitably until 2031, though the agency has granted an extension to 1 January 2036.

“The NPD believes that further operation of Gullfaks B is needed in order to recover the remaining resources on Gullfaks,” the agency stated.
