The Norwegian state-run player has agreed to take over the interests in four licences from UK-listed Tullow Oil, which announced last month plans to exit Norway.
The deal will result in Statoil becoming the biggest stakeholder in OMV-operated production licence 537 that hosts Wisting Central after acquiring Tullow's 20% interest, giving it a total 35% stake.
It follows an Upstream report last month indicating Statoil, led by chief executive Eldar Saetre, was a likely candidate to pick up Tullow's stake in the discovery.
