Chevron said in a brief securities filing on Tuesday that Stumpf "resigned for personal reasons and not as a result of a disagreement with Chevron".
His resignation on Monday is effective immediately, a spokesman said.
Stumpf, 63, had served on Chevron's 10-member board of directors since May of 2010. He was on the Board Nominating & Governance and Management Compensation committees.
