Timor-Leste revealed on Monday it had launched compulsory conciliation proceedings under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

It said the conciliation procedure engaged Australia in a formal process which would be carried out by an independent panel of experts, known as the conciliation commission.

Timor-Leste claims successive Australian governments have refused to negotiate over permanent maritime boundaries since the country gained independence in 2002.
