The veteran leader stepped down earlier this year after 37 years at the French explorer, most recently as executive vice president and president, Upstream.
Kosmos chief executive Andrew Inglis said he was "delighted" with Darricarrere's appointment at the company.
The upstart independent has distinguished itself with discoveries in Africa, where Total has also been a longtime player.
"Given his extensive experience managing major exploration and production projects while with Total, I am confident that Yves-Louis will bring deep industry knowledge and fresh perspective to our Board," Inglis said in a statement.
