The prime minister claimed victory after the leader of the opposition Labor Party, Bill Shorten, conceded defeat on Sunday as it became apparent his party would not have the numbers in the lower house to form government.
“It is clear that Mr Turnbull and his Coalition will form a government, whether or not it’s a minority government, or a majority government of one or two seats, it is clear they will form a government,” Shorten said in a speech on Sunday.
