The company said it wanted to evaluate the reservoir using the pilot bore before drilling a horizontal well.
It said flow results were better than expected but did not provide figures.
Urals said it expected to complete the well and produce first oil by the beginning of June.
The company also said it had taken delivery of a second Chinese-built rig, and expected a further two units before the end of the year.
