Drillers added 14 oil rigs in the week to 22 July, bringing the total rig count up to 371, compared with 659 a year ago, energy services firm Baker Hughes said.
The number of rigs chasing gas dropped by one to 88, compared to 216 a year ago.
Meanwhile, the number of rigs categorised as "miscellaneous" increased by two for a total of three, compared to just one a year ago.
