The US oil rig count rose by one to reach 407 for the week ended 2 September, compared with 662 a year ago, data from oil services company Baker Hughes showed on Friday.
The number of gas-directed rigs also rose, gaining seven units for a total of 88, down by 114 from a year ago.
Louisiana was the biggest loser this week, shedding seven rigs for a total of 35.
