The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) laid out the details of the new rule, which includes both "prescriptive and performance-based standards."
The standards, which were developed with an "unprecedented" level of outreach to industry, take on blowout preventer systems, double shear rams, third party reviews of equipment, real-time monitoring data, safe drilling margins, centralisers and inspection intervals.
"The well control rule is a vital part of our extensive reform agenda to strengthen, update and modernise our offshore energy programme using lessons learned from the Deepwater Horizon," Interior Secretary Sally Jewell said.
