The Obama administration on Wednesday underscored its opposition to drilling in new US offshore areas by denying six permits to conduct seismic surveys off the Atlantic coast.

The outgoing president in December made the move to take off the table 3.8 million acres in the North and mid-Atlantic for oil and gas exploration and development.

Acreage in that region has also been removed from the agency's 2017-2022 leasing plans, leading to little need at present for the data, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM).
