The company announced on Wednesday that it had started drilling well number-one on the Yuzhno-Visovaya prospect in the Severo-Yareyyaginsky block, located in the Nenets autonomous district.
The target depth of the well is 4000 metres. Vostok is chasing a Devonian-aged prospect.
Drilling began after an extensive seismic survey covering 103 square kilometers was done on the block. It was part of an estimated $145 million seismic programme for Vostok that will run through 2017.
